This workshop addresses the requests that have been posed to Spoutwood Farm and to the instructor, Michael Kaiser, about the making of Mead.

You may have tasted  mead at the "Fairie Festival Friday Night Bonfire" (we consumed a full 6 gallons of a young [45 day!] traditional mead in about an hour!) or have been in attendance at a FF meeting at Spoutwood, and have stayed long enough to try some mead. Well Rob and Lucy want their own "cellar" of mead for various activities at the Farm, such as the "Fairie Festival Saturday Night Bonfire", "Summer Solstice Bonfire", "Harvest Festival" (TBA), and "I Have Just Finished The Weeding In The Foursquare Garden, I Think I'll Have A Glass Of Mead Thankyouverymuch Celebration" (TBA), and have asked me (Michael Kaiser) to lead a workshop on the brewing, drinking, and appreciation of mead.

This will be the second Mead Making Workshop at Spoutwood, with more scheduled next year. (about every 6 months) This first workshop will cover the basics, such as:

Why Make Mead?

How to make mead (duh)

Equipment needed (not much, and not expensive)

Honeys and their effect on the final product

Yeasts and their qualities and different applications

Water quality and its effect on the final product

Boiling vs. Steeping

Care of your Carboy

Patience

Racking

Bottling and Storage

Mead and its History

Mead and Spirituality

Batches of Cyser bubbling away

Future classes will delve into the finer points of mead, such as:

Brewing Organically

Melomels and Fruit

Hippocras and Beneficial Meads

Metheglyn and the Seasons

Brewing with the Moon

Brewing for Special Occasions

Mead associated Drinking Vessels

Mead Philosophy

I strongly urge those people attending any of the advanced classes to take the beginners class first, or be able to display a marked knowledge of mead making to the instructor prior to the class. And please bring a sample of your craft, wether it be mead , ale, or some other yummy libation!  :)
