What is Spoutwood Farm?

Spoutwood is a 26-acre farm 35 miles north of Baltimore and 15 miles south of York nestled in Glen Rock, PA. The front field is a 3-acre CSA that has been operating and farmed organically since 1996 and was fallow for the preceding 10 years.

OK, What is Community Supported Agriculture?

As fewer and fewer farmers and larger and larger agribusinesses supply the food needs of more and more people, it is little wonder that we are increasingly separated from the sources of our sustenance. Being uninformed or unconcerned or occupied with “more important” things, makes it difficult to see just how compromised our Earth has become, just how inefficient and wasteful a food distribution system we have and how we could be eating more wholesomely.

In the 1980’s, the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) movement arose in response to this criticalsituation. In the CSA model, shareholders commit to support a farm, “their farm,” by paying in advance for a regular supply of vegetables. This allows the farmer to grow the best quality produce without the economic worry that now besets modern agriculture. The commitment of shareholders to absorb losses or celebrate surpluses helps offset the unpredictability of the marketplace or weather. For the shareholder member, the CSA system restores a sense of responsibility for the quality of their food.

Food is local, fresh (usually delivered the day it is picked), and produced without the use of harmful fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. People can see and relate to the source of their food. Members may also choose to be involved in the decision-making, from what is grown to how much is planted.

How it Works

  • Each shareholder receives at least 22 weekly deliveries of fresh organic produce.
  • A Large Share is intended to meet most ofthe local produce needs for 3-4 peopleand costs $660 (about $30 dollars a week).
  • A Medium Share (60% of the Large Size) is intended for 1-2 people and costs $440 (less than $20 per week).
  • CSA shareholders reinforce their sense of ownership and involvement by giving modest “working support” of 15 hours per Large Share and 10 hours per Medium Share. This also helps connect members with the land and its harvest, and gives an understanding of its limits and surpluses.
  • “Work Exchange” shares are available for those who would like to receive their weekly share in exchange for administrative or field work(70 hrs. Medium, 100 hrs.Large). This is an important component of the CSA and something we wish to expand this year.

Of course! Not only is Spoutwood looking for help around the farm, but we are also a 501c3 non-profit that always welcomes donations. All donations are fully tax deductible. Just let us know if you are interested.
