CSA Harvest Guide : September 22

Unfortunately, this cake is not in your bag. But it was delicious. Thanks to everyone who kicked off my birthday celebrations today! Even knowing how much our harvest crew loves a reason to celebrate, I was surprised. So, thank you. It is wonderful to be surrounded by such good people.

Now, down to business. In your bag: potato, leeks, fennel or eggplant, Swiss chard, jalapeno peppers, specialty peppers, and rosemary.

About the Leeks

It is bitter sweet to part with our leeks. It is hard to explain how much care and time go into a long season crop. If I told you they were started in February, transplanted in April, weeded numerous times, and finally harvested today, it makes it seem too simple. Is the process actually that simple? My mind may want to complicate the life of the leeks because I start to reflect on all the work and worry that we've endured since February. Whether this post-partum depression is for the leeks themselves or the letting go of something that has been in our care for so long, I am not sure. Either way our leeks got the respect they deserved today by our harvesters; it took Emily and Brett three and half hours to harvest, cut, and bundle 125 bunches. No other vegetable has taken that much time to harvest.
