Spoutwood Spotlight : Today's Rainy Harvest

Just yesterday we were praying for rain. We feared having to irrigate the garden. This morning, it was a relief to wake up and hear it was pouring outside. I was happy to spend the morning in the packing shed, washing and counting the veggies. Little did I know to what extent our prayers were answered. Above is a shot of our field turned pond. The little stream that is 5 feet at it's widest point, and rarely knee-level, was overflowing to say the least.

Below is farm manager Brett, on his way to see if the bridge was still there; as the last rain had knocked it off keel.

We worked through the rain and had a successful, bountiful harvest. Below are a couple shots of our produce, and flowers; things that you will find in your share this week.

Today's Harvest

Today's harvest was one of our biggest yet. In your share you'll find cucumbers, yellow squash, patty pan, zucchini, eggplant, onions, tomatoes (slicing and sun gold), yellow wax beans, and basil. Phew. The cucumbers alone weighed 272 pounds; a total of 505 were harvested. Below is a chart describing red onions; the only vegetable you haven't previously received in your share.

Vegetable Description Washing / Storing General Use
Red Onion Onions have a paper-thin skin that cover a bulb. When halved, you'll see it's concentrically arranged layers. They range in size, and color, but all have a distinct pungent smell, and the the ability to make one cry. Onions should be stored at room temperature, away from bright light, and in a manner where they are well ventilated. To do this, either place them in a wire hanging basket or a perforated bowl with a raised base so that air can circulate underneath. Sauteing onions and garlic together is a great start to almost any dish. Our red onions taste especially nice sliced thin and eaten raw on a sandwich. Here is a quick recipe I found for some salsa: combine chopped onions, tomatoes, avocado and jalapeno for an all-in-one guacamole salsa dip.
