Spoutwood Farm
CSA Harvest Guide : Week 14
Spoutwood News, Photos, and Events
We are hoping that you were able to carry your shares today; they were heavy! Not only was it a bountiful vegetable harvest, but each member also received a watermelon. The melons were not grown here at Spoutwood, we bought them from Dave Dietz, a local organic farmer and friend. Dietz is well known around York, especially at Central Market. If you ever have a chance to check out York's Central Market, stop by Dave's stand, he is there, willing to answer questions, under a banner that reads 'DIETZ FARM'. You can catch him any Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday, from 6 am - 2 pm.

*Credit has to be given to my friend, Paul, for the pictures on this weeks harvest guide. I didn't ask permission to pull them from the web, so I hope it is OK that I'm sharing his iPhone art. I dig the pictures; he's a talented phone photographer.

EVENT : Saturday, 9/11 : Chris Carpenter will be leading 'Evening of Wonder' this Saturday at 7:30 pm. This 'tour of the heavens' will focus on Jupiter, the moon, and various constellations. Come check out our new observatory and telescope!
Today's Harvest
We have to give a special thanks to the members that come out and help us on Thursdays; we'd be lost without them! Week 14 turned out to be another huge harvest. In your bag you should expect: watermelon, squash, carrots, eggplant, kohlrabi, bok choy, peppers, tomatoes, garlic, turnip greens, mizuna, and an herb (either dill or cilantro).
It seems that turnip greens are the only veggie that might need an explanation; the rest you have seen in your share. Below is a chart that might help.

| Turnip Greens |
Turnip greens are the leaf of the turnip plant, better known for its root. They have a slightly bitter taste, but the flavor is delicious. |
The roots are still attached to your greens, so cut them off before storing. Store the unwashed greens in a plastic bag; be sure to squeeze out excess air before putting them in the crisper compartment. Wash like you would lettuce, or any other green. |
You get the most nutrients from steaming the greens. For more flavor, saute in olive oil and drizzle with lemon juice. |
