Spoutwood Spotlight : Teen Iron Chef

Spoutwood is lucky to have a dedicated member, Liz Weinwand, run the Teen Iron Chef program here at the farm. The summer session wrapped up a few weeks ago, but not before it made headlines. The York Dispatch came out and spent a day with the teens : http://www.yorkdispatch.com/food/ci_15878762.

Teen Iron Chef is starting to get the attention it deserves. It is a wonderful program that teaches teens how to prepare fresh, healthy food. From the sidelines, it is interesting to see the kids gain confidence in the kitchen; Liz offers guidance, but the teens teach each other.
TODAY'S HARVEST
The only new comer to your bag today is the herb, Thyme. Other than that, you are all familiar with the veggies in your share. However, we hope that you are as delighted with the return of bok choy, mustard greens, and radishes, as we are. Also expect to find peppers, eggplant, patty pan squash, yellow squash, and tomatoes.

We are scrounging each week to find enough bags for the tomatoes. If you have any plastic shopping bags, please drop them off at the farm!

Fairie Festival 2011

The Festival is rain or shine!
Admission:
$15 for ages 13 and up $5 for ages 3-12 2 and under: FREE
Friday April 29: Ages 12 and under FREE
Parking is $5 in Lots 1, 2 and 3
Limited Handicapped parking at Festival Entrance and Lot 2. Drop off strollers and wheelchairs at Festival Entrance, if desired.

Directions to the three festival parking lots. From here you will need to take a short stroll (about 3/10 of a mile) to the festival.
From York and North Head South on I-83 to Exit 8 (Glen Rock). Turn right onto Rte. 216 West. Go into Glen Rock. Stay on 216 West for 4 miles out of Glen Rock. Turn left onto Pierceville Rd. Parking is 1/4 mile on left. From Baltimore and South Take I-83 North to Middletown Road Exit 31. Turn left onto Middletown Rd. Go 12.7 miles to Pierceville Rd. Turn right and parking is on the right. From Hanover and West Take Rte 216 East toward Glen Rock. Turn right at Sticks intersection, the junction of Rtes 216 and 516. Turn right, going one mile to Pierceville Rd. Turn left. Parking is on the right.
TRAVEL TIP: If you are travelling through the Carlisle PA area, be advised that the Spring Car Show (which draws several thousand people each day, like we do) will be happening, in addition to major traffic pattern changes within the town itself. Watch for MAJOR congestion in Carlisle and nearby on I-81 and the PA Turnpike!

Teen Battle Chef

The Teen Battle Chef program empowers youth to become ambassadors for healthy eating, through hands-on cooking activities. TBC is the flagship program for FamilyCook Productions. This year FamilyCook Productions is partnering with TV's Dr. Oz to bring TBC to over 50 schools across the country. Spoutwood Farm is the model for Farm/CSA Teen Battle Chef programs that are "stirring up change" in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
Teen Battle Chef is an eight session program that teaches teens and "tweens" how to cook using fresh, healthful ingredients. Each week two teams of young chefs learn culinary skills, nutrition, team work and leadership as they make (and taste) delicious multicultural recipes and present their finished products in the weekly "food battles." The chefs learn about the county of origin of the recipes and experience new foods and flavors. Ultimately each team researches and creates a recipe to prepare for the "final battle." Family and special guests are invited to celebrate with the teams at their final presentations. The cost for the eight week program is $80.00 per chef
Spoutwood's Teen Battle Chefs can go on to lead food demonstrations at Spoutwood events, community health fairs, farmers markets, and create garden to table cooking demonstrations during the CSA season. We are also "cooking up" opportunities for Spoutwood Teen Battle Chefs to host other TBC teams in an invitational "cook off."

Many, Many Thanks to all the exhibitors, performers and guests who made the first "Tastes of York" a unique success:
And a Huge Thanks to PASA (The PA Association of Sustainable Agriculture) and it's immensely important work of promoting local farming throughout the Commonwealth and indeed the world for inspiring us to pull "Tastes" together. Brian Snyder, Exec Director of PASA is often in Harrisburg or DC pushing for favorable policies for fresh local non-environmentally invasive food, often in the face of stern opposition from agribusiness interests, happy with the subsidized status quo.
All of our informal exit interviews detected a high level of satisfaction from event goers, many saying they had no idea about what local food is becoming available all over York County and that they learned a lot. Favorites were the samples from Victor's Italian (an incredible stuffed pasta with olives), Glen Rock Mill Inn (class wrap act), Spoutwood's Teen Battle Chef's garden veggie quesadilla, Julianna's (great veggies and goat cheese presentations, etc.), Food Availability Task Force/Market Basket of the Month and Buy Fresh, Buy Local display and sample of raw zucchini based dish put together by Jo Anne Ward-Cottrell, Deliciously Nutritious of York Central Market with unusual and tasty offerings, numerous excellent local cheese samples from John Esh (smoked and garlic cheddar both unbelievable! And if you didn't taste his creamy Swiss cheese, heaven help you) as well as Saubel's Markets' tasty raw milk offering, Perrydell's ice cream of course with the cutest sampler mini-cones, Naylor's First Capitol and KeWe wines, Swissland Acres for meatballs, etc. from pastured beef (thanks Jen for the email blast that got many folks in), Sonnewald for healthy sweetener and tonic tea samples, and the unofficial winner of this year's best booth award goes to Healthy World Café with its café table setting including fresh flowers and great musical performers by the old mill-less streamside setting topped off by its wonderful pea hummus on pita or community garden grown red lettuce (thanks to Ellen Morgan) served in a compostable sample cup. Hooray to all of you and those I forgot to mention. People were delighted and fascinated by the wealth of healthy local food!
As for the Performers: A huge thanks to Mike Males of www.myruralradio.com, whose word going out to his stable of musicians produced more volunteer acts than we could schedule. Notable was the high quality of all performers including Spoutwood perennial volunteer and leader of our Zero Waste efforts Tom Hopkins (the only non My Rural Radio act), the wonderful teen talent Morgan LaFave who converted my golf cart boy brigade of helpers into Morgan groupies, John Chiders who came over 2 hours to play beautifully, and Three Dollar Suit which to my amazement included on base Bill Kalina, our virtual Glen Rock neighbor who has taken many a photo at the farm for his job with The York Newspapers!
The numbers were respectable for a first event: 293 adults and 66 kids plus about 75 people associated with exhibiters and performers. In addition we now have 77 email addresses to help develop a notification database for these kinds of events. But as we kept saying: it wasn't the numbers that were important, it was the quality of the visitors. All those who came seemed open and hungry (pun intended) for fresh local food solutions. Many were new to the concept but even the choir members who came learned a lot!
Those of us involved with the local York County food movement need to decide where we go next with what seems to be a rapidly growing public need. In the meantime I welcome any, I repeat, ANY COMMENTS or observations which will help us for future events.
